The Bunk Beds of today are nothing like they were in years past. Today you can get bunks in a variety of sizes such as: twin over twin, twin over double, double over double, queen over queen and so on. When space is an issue bunk are the way to go. However, there are dangers associated with them. Here are 6 basic safety tips to avoid injuries while using a bunk bed:

1. Never allow a child under 6 years old on the top bunk. Most 6 year olds have good climbing skills however; they may need a few more years to understand the use of caution and safety that would help them make better decisions regarding their own behavior on the top bunk.

2. Always use the ladder for getting up and down from the top bunk. Many bunk beds have slats on either end that may look safe. However, only the ladder is specifically designed to support their weight.

3. Caution your children not to jump on a bunk bed. While the dangers of jumping on the top are obvious, even jumping on the bottom can weaken the entire structure or result in head injuries.

4. Place the bed tightly against the wall to prevent children from becoming trapped between the bunk and wall.

5. Fixtures loosen over time, so look over the whole structure and tighten loose screws. Also, regularly check to ensure that the ladder, the guardrails, and other parts are tightly screwed down and properly in place.

6. Never hang items from any part of the bed, this is dangerous! Kids may reach over the edge for them, swing from them, and risk falling off or strangling themselves.
